Man Oh Man Another Great Soul who has left his earthly plane WAY TOO SOON! A Total DOWNER!!! The last month or so has seen plenty of loses in the music/enertainment world -Issac Hayes Bernie Mac Tenor Great Johnny Griffin and many others!

We were fortunate to meet the ‘classic 70’s lineup (sans Philippe) @ Sams Town Nov 22nd 1995, when John (Edwards) was handling lead vocals. And was also fortunate to get back stage and meet the guys and get all of our Spinners Albums signed including Billy John and Pervis!!!

Two of those 5 aqre still standing - wow -Funny How Quickly Ime Passes Away - and so does many of these great singers! Pervis, your ‘fantastic bass voice’ will be missed but not forgotten! Condolences to The Jackson Family!

The Spinners have future live commitments and it will interesting to see how many of them will go on - with or without a replacement for Pervis!

  2. Ann & Chubby Tavares Says:

What a man - what a voice - we will miss you. Our love and blessings to Claudreen and the children.

What a voice. I took my grandaughter with me to Pevis’s last show with The Spinners last month in Alhambra Ca. What a show it was. That was the one and only time I have ever seen The Spinners live. I’m sure glad I was there. Thanks for all the music. Pervis. You were one of the all time greatest.

  9. Lamaur Says:

I’ve been blessed to have had you in my life. Your voice was not only great, it comforted many and expressed much wisdom. You knew Mr. Jackson was in the room and you’ll be remembered and missed. Thank you. My prayers are with you and your family.

Another lost in the music arena. I know of three great loses in a week time. Pervis you are still one of the great music arena along with Bernie Mac and Issac Hayes, you three are the real soul brothers of all time. It was a honor to meet all the Spinners in Hawaii Dec 2007 a day I will cherish always, because of the Xmas songs that was sung was breathless especially Do-Wap with Pervis and Charlton. My condolence to the Jackson family and the Spinners.

  12. Bob Davis/Soul-Patrol.com Says:

    IT’S A SHAME…

…That Pervis Jackson the bass singer of the Spinners passed away this week.

In his honor I played both the Spinners version of “It’s a Shame”, as well as Monie Love’s version today here at the crib. I realize that a few of yall will consider Monie Love’s version to be a “sacrilege.” However you shouldn’t. It actually has more “juice” sung from a female perspective, considering what the song is actually about (not to mention the kick azz sax solo in this version). So don’t sleep on her version!!!

Later I think that I will play both versions for my daughter. I wonder if she will like either one?

After listening to Monie Love’s version, I then put on the Spinners version…

It was a pleasure to listen to the Spinners version as well. I hadn’t listened in a while and I listened to it about 10 times straight (hitting the repeat button on the CD player).

I remember when it first came out and how much I dug the song, back in 1970 (I think?). I remember that I wanted to actually buy the 45, but I was too cheap to buy it. That’s because seemed like “It’s a Shame” was then playing on EVERY single radio station in NYC at that time, and at the age of 13 years old, with my limited record buying budget, I didn’t see the need in parting with 59 cents to buy the 45 :-)

I tried taping it off of the radio (the old school version of illegal mp3 downloads), but I was never able to get that entire opening guitar solo, without the DJ’s voice announcing the song.

There really wasn’t any need to buy it, because it didn’t matter what radio station you turned on, you could hear “It’s a Shame”. It was one of those great infectious tunes that you found yourself humming to yourself, while waiting for a bus, on the basketball court or wherever you were, no matter who you were with.

Great song, one of the greatest in the history of Soul music. Featuring some cold blooded lyrics by Stevie Wonder about being cheated on (by
Syreeta?) and some really funky guitar licks by Marv Tarplin (I think?), with some GREAT harmonies by the Spinners. Even today “It’s a Shame”, still sounds fresh & funky. It’s the equal to any of the great songs by the Temptations and I can listen to this song over and over again, morning noon & night…

A few months ago I was introduced to GC Cameron by Harvey Fuqua (who discovered the Spinners).

    Harvey says to me…

“Hey Bob this is GC Cameron, I’ll bet cha don’t know nothin bout no GC Cameron????”

    I said…

F*ck Harvey, GC Cameron is the lead singer of one of the baddest songs of all time, “IT’S A F*CKIN SHAME” (god-dammit)!!!

I then stuck my right hand out and GC Cameron, “gave me a pound.”

And with that Harvey turns to GC Cameron and says….

“See I told you about Bob Davis”

And with that we all laughed.

What’s a real shame, is that I never got to meet Pervis Jackson and have a conversation with him, so I can’t really tell you all anything about him. However I’ve spoken with many people during the course of this day who knew Pervis Jackson quite well. They all told me that Pervis Jackson was one hell of a nice guy and that I would have enjoyed having a conversation with him.

The fact that I never did so is indeed “a shame” and ultimately that is my loss.

However the fact that Pervis Jackson has left behind so many other people who knew him and knew him well enough to testify to his greatness as a person (not as an entertainer), is a great thing.

Because at the end of the day, just about the ONLY thing that truly matters in this world is what the individuals that you had a chance to have an impact on during your time here on this earth have to say about you after you are no longer here to rebut any of the things that they might say.

And on this day, Pervis Jackson can smile, because those that he had influence on have nothing but good things to say about him….

I was totally shocked and saddened with the passing of Mr. Jackson. Not only was he a World Class Bass Singer. But he was a sweet hearted man, and I will forever be thankful for the time he spent with me before and after one of their concerts. Your tips and advice has been taken to heart Mr. Jackson. Now every time I start singing some bass myself I’ll always remember what a good friend you were and the high standard you made for ever up and coming bass singer. I miss you sooooo much, and I’ll always be thinking about you! R.I.P Pervis Jackson.

You and I will always be Bass Brothers :)

  16. Cliff Perkins Soul Generation Says:

I remember we were playing at the Mark IV in DC and the Spinners were playing at the TPWarner Theatre across the street. Their show had finished and they decided to come over to our show (Soul Generation). When they came in the MC Catfish announced them and I was so proud we were in the same room.During our show we invited them to the stage and our band started playing one of their songs and we all started singing. It was one of the hightlites of my career. At the end of the night they told my group that they were really entertained by Soul Generation. That made my day, week, month ect. Pervis did all the talking in his low voice and it was great. Rest in peace my brother your the best.

  17. Jonny Meadow Says:

A friend of 48 years has gone on to his next life. He left an indellable impression on all who knew him. he will always be “the bass of THE SPINNERS” and carry the nick-name MR.12:45. My sympathy to his family, the group and his legion of fans throughout the world. He’ll have a permanent shrine in the “Locker Room” in Detroit and The Carnagie Delicatessan in New York City. A great loss of a good friend, a superb entertainer and a fine humanitarian. He’ll go to heaven with either Covassier or Hennessy or Remy Martin. No one who met him will ever forget the uniquely magnetic personality of Purvis “Action” Jackson.

  19. Paul from Houston Says:

We lost a bit of what says that “the world is still good because of good people.” I feel a real sadness tonight hearing about Mr. Pervis’ passing.
I still remember like it was yesterday, how excited me and my friends were when we heard the Spinner’s were coming to my campus, Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant about 1978. We were so looking forward, that we waited out all night to get tickets. On the concert night, we made it a ‘big night on the town’. The Spinners were all, and more, than we anticipated.
It is not everyday, you can think of a group of people, here individuals, who truly add to the quality of your life; and say “I am Blessed.”

Thank you Lord, for the Life of Pervis Jackson; my friend, my brother. The sorrow from loss, turns to tears of joy, knowing where he is now.

We all are better people because Mr. Pervis Jackson and the Spinners were a part of our lives.

  20. Larry Buford Says:

I feel honored and privileged that I was able to write a review of Pervis Jackson’s last performance with The Spinners in Alhambra California. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those who were close to him and knew him personally…

THE SPINNERS: STILL SPINNING THE MOTOWN MAGIC!
    By Larry Buford

In Alhambra, a city just east of Los Angeles made up of about 86,000 people; the city where producer Phil Spector resides; Motown’s legendary Spinners performed at the 2008 Summer Jubilee (7/19/08).

The sun had already set on this outdoor venue as the Spinners took to the stage, and the minute they walked on, the audience knew something very special was about to take place. Dressed in immaculate lavender suits, their cool presence was like having an ice cream cone on a warm summer night.

They opened with “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” with the effervescent Bobby Smith on lead vocals. The group’s every step and hand gesture was synchronized to near perfection with the exception of the bass singer Pervis Jackson who, for health reasons was seated on stage as he sang his parts (man does he have a deep voice!). Followed by “It’s A Shame”, then a rendition of the Willie Nelson tune “Funny” that offered first tenor Spike Bonhart a chance to showcase his vocal range at the end of the song (that last note threatened to shatter glass!).

The Spinners who have had six Grammy nominations sang all their hits including “I’ll Be Around” and “Working My Way Back To You”, and the crowd of mostly Asian and Latino descent sang and danced right along to them all. Second tenor Charlton Washington gave a moving performance of “Sadie” and “Love Don’t Love Nobody”, but his amazing grasp of the ad-lib on “Mighty Love” was so convincingly and naturally performed it was like former member Phillipe Wynne (deceased) had been resurrected!!

Backed by a five man ensemble that was as tight as the cap on a Tylenol bottle, and locked in the dynamic beat of drummer David Brandon, the Spinners delivered a whole package that kept the audience moving higher and higher. A former conductor for the Supremes, Marvin Marshall who was in the audience said, “ anytime you come out to see one of these Motown acts, you will get your money’s worth, and you will be thoroughly entertained.” Marshall was also the guitarist playing that famous intro on the Spinners recording of “It’s A Shame”. Fans were thrilled to know Marshall along with another Motown veteran, former bandleader for the Temptations, Cornelius Grant, were in the audience.

Due to some minor technical difficulties, band member Willie Wooten (keyboard) wondered after the show if the band came across alright. Well that question would be answered best by fans Vickie Arroyo and Bo Ballentine who were on their feet dancing and singing through most of the show who said, “It was great…awesome!” The Spinners did the Motown tradition proud!

  21. Larry Buford Says:

It’s not the years in a life, but rather the life in the years that matters…let us celebrate Pervis’ life!!!

  22. Jeff Grunden Says:

Like so many fans, I met Pervis in a way that simply cannot
    be imagined in today’s security-conscious world. After a 1981
show in Pittsburgh, a couple of us 20-something white boys
sheepishly talked with the group’s musical director, who
matter-of-factly told us to go backstage, through the kitchen,
and up to the group’s suite of rooms on the third floor. We
knocked, and Pervis answered almost immediately, saying,
“Come on in and relax, fellas…there’s food and drink. We’re
changing our clothes and we’ll be out to relax and chat with you
in a few minutes.” And that’s exactly what happened. Over
the years, I’ve heard so many fans say that Pervis treated them
the same way—like a neighbor sitting on the front porch on
a warm summer night. Because of him, I’ve always felt
the Spinners were ‘my’ group. No surprise, then, for me to read
in his obit that he was married 40 years. A helluva guy.

    Jeff Grunden, Pittsburgh, PA

  23. Rev. Thomas Gordy Says:

At various intervals during our lifetime, we all walk through the vally of grief. And plastered on its walls are memories of the person we are giving our attention to at that particular moment. As we think about a particular experience, we can’t help but say a prayer of healing. I remember Pervis as a good person who was also a gracious individual. He not only cared about life and loved his family, but he also enjoyed being the spinner that he was. I know God is healing his family now, as I also know that his physical presence will be missed. But the memory of him will be in our minds forever.

  24. Jim Cheers Says:

First off, My most sincere condolences to the Jackson Family at this time of loss. My wife and I are praying to the Lord to give you all the strength to make it throug this very heart tugging ordeal. I still vividly remember my very short time rehearsing with and doing my only performance with the guys at the Dairy Workers hall in Detroit back in 1971.This was after G.C. Cameron had left the group. I also distinctly remember when Purvis said to me in that velvety smooth bass voice of his when I didn’t make the “Cut”, ” Jimmy I like the way you step..but yo’ lead ain’t knockin’ me out” Then came Phillipe, and the rest as they say was history. That brief time continues to live with me as one of the most profound experiences of my life. After many years of not seeing the guys, I asked some of my music industry friends in Detroit if the guys still lived in the city. Some one told me that Purvis would stop at a local pub in the city called the Locker Room. The next time I was in Detroit, I did stop by and lo and behold, I heard this booming bass voice say “Jimmy Cheers, and a Robust Jimmy Cheers at that” ( he was talking about the weight I had gained). It was quite a memorable visit with many more to follow. Purvis I will truly miss being able to sit with you and David Brandon, and chat for hours like we use to. Bobby, Henry, I truly cherish knowing you as friends and please know that you guys will always be in my prayers for strength to carry on with the “Legend” known as “The Spinners”
    Purvis R.I.P.,
    Your Friend, Jimmy Cheers

  25. Yeadon Entertainment Says:

  26. Dee Says:

Please know that God will sustain us through these difficult times we have had to endure lately. Everybody just trust Him even though we will miss our entertainment family/friends who have gone before us. Much love and prayers!

  27. Mike Mullens Says:

A great loss of a legend. My prayers go out to his family. Pervis will be remembered forever. I feel blessed that I had the chance to see him perform several times over the years.

  28. Cornelius Grant Says:

I was fortunate to attend Pervis’ last performance in Alhambra. I was moved by the audience response as he took center stage to introduce the group members. The memory of that resounding bass voice will be remembered forever. R.I.P. my longtime (8 mile rd) friend.

  29. Jesi Silveria Says:

Many blessings and much love will follow Pervis to the place he now resides… Thank you for the legendary gifts & talents your bass voice has left all of us with, to live on in your music… I was at your last show in Alhambra, CA. and it was awesome! The energy of the band, the presence of the Spinners and the total enjoyment from the crowd was so evident at the event. Pervis bowed out of his last show with a loud cheer from the crowd, just as he deserved… Blessings and much love to the Jackson family… My condolences to all of you…. he will be missed…

    Jesi Silveria

  30. Phyllis Burruss Says:

My prayers and sympathy go out to Claudreen and the Pervis family including the rest of the Spinners - Pervis was the best bass singer I have ever heard - God is calling some of our great entertainers home but we still have their music to remember them by - From all of us from Bianca’s Cruise and Travel here in Charlotte, NC - We will miss Pervis - a truly great guy -

  31. David Edelstein Says:

A fan for 30+ years. Early on, after Mighty Love was released (?1978?) I saw the group at the Westbury Music Fair on Long Island. When they did Mighty Love they each went into the audience. Pervis went into my section and when I went to shake his hand I called him by name. As they had not introduced themselves yet I think he was surprised that I knew his name. He says in my ear “Why don’t you come backstage after the show”. It was a thrill to meet them all and watch them enjoy their hard earned success. I’ve read similar examples of this type of kindness on this blog. I have been lucky to meet the guys several times after this and what struck me was just what a true gentleman PJ was. In a day and age where celebs distance themselves from their fans-he felt it was important to do just the opposite. My sympathies to his wife and children

  32. Lester & Mika Says:

To The Spinners and the Family of Pervis:

We had the opportunity to see Pervis perform onstage and to interact with him backstage and we can truly say that both sides of him will be missed. Pervis was a professional that took his craft seriously and a pleasant man who took people seriously. The Spinners, Pervis’ family and fans are in our prayers.

    Rev. & Mrs. Lester Wormley

  33. Howard McClure Says:

I am very sadden to hear of the loss of another orignal member of one of my favorite groups The Spinners. I’ve been a fan for over 35 years and I can remember hearing Pervis (Mr. 12:45) in songs with the late Philppe Wynn “I Could Never Repay Your Love” (The Spinners), Now That We’re Together (Happiness Is Being With The Spinners), Love Trippin with John Edwards, and other great songs. I was very fortunate to watch The Spinners perform in Charlotte,NC six years ago at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, and it was a great show. I also remember having the opportunity to shaking the hands of John Edwards and Pervis Jackson while performing in Charlotte at Carowinds but unfortunately was not able to receive any autographs. I was very happy to get a handshake from one of favorite groups. My thought and prayers go out to The Spinners and to the Jackson family in this time of grief.

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Revelation 21:4

May you find comfort in what God has promised (Isaiaah55:11)

  34. DOnna Moore Says:

It’s was for the good old day that we shared the good music and dance until … someone said one more time for the spinner…. the cha cha… and the slow moving it was all good.
sleep well my friend for we will see you again

my support to the family in prayers

  37. Curtis J. Blakely Says:

I was just watching The Mighty Spinners on You tube performing The Rubberband Man on The Midnight Special watching Pervis in motion just like the rest of the group. Pervis was the voice of the group in it came to interveiws and I always loved hearing him talk. I also loved watching the group on David Letterman in 2006. My prayers go out to the Jackson family and to the Spinners. Rest in peace 12:45.

  38. SPYDER TURNER Says:

My condolences to his family and friends.
I’m going to miss you my friend

  39. Georgina Reed Says:

With sadness I’ve just heard of the passing over of Pervis. I’ve been spinning the Spinners since before I began my professional DJ career in 1982, and still listen & love the style, the emotion and the carisma that the Spinners embodied, and the great music they have provided for our enjoyment over the years!
Even though I’m in Sydney, Australia, we have a vibrant soul-music loving community here and I will be presenting a special (as I’m sure many other radio presenters all over the world are doing this week) to commemorate the music of Pervis via the Spinners, this coming Sunday 24th August on Sydney Radio FM99.3 between 2 & 6pm. Unfortunately we’re a local Sydney station so not broadcast to the world, nevertheless I will enjoy every moment of every tune including “It’s a Shame”, “Mighty Love”, Rubberband Man” et al.
Condolences to family members and friends. Our hearts go out to you in this time of loss and reflection.
Let’s celebrate Pervis’ life with a song!! A MIGHTY LOVE!
    Sydney’s Soul Sister… Georgina Reed.

Pervis …it is a blessing to have known you …from back-in-the day when we were all crammed together in a little white building known as Hitsville USA.

I will forever remember the voice that mirrored the man … soulful, deep, unpretentious, warm, profound and gentle. Truly, one of the greats! THANK YOU!!

No doubt, you have fulfilled your purpose …sharing your gift, and your spirit.

    Well done, dear friend

  46. Clay mcmurray Says:

You are one of a kind and your contributions to Motown, The Spinners, The Music Biz in general and those who loved you will always rein supreme. I’ll miss you my Motown Brother but I will never forget you…..see you soon around 12:45

  47. Freddy T Says:

My wife and I saw the Spinners in the late 90’s and I fondly remember Pervis voicing a station ID for my radio show after their awesome performance. He said “Hi this is Pervis Jackson of the Spinners, GROOVE ON Y’ALL”. We will never forget his exhuberent personality and wonderful bass soul vocals.

  48. Marc Mitchell Says:

I count Mr. Jackson among the celebrities I have had the pleasure of meeting. In 1974, at a autograph signing at a record store in Gary, Indiana, I was a young upstart in the local funk band Funk Reaction…I met Pervis, along with Bobby and Henry. Later that evening I enjoyed a world-class, highly-polished performance of one of the legendary vocal groups of our generation. By the way, I was nineteen at the time. I recall Mr. Jackson gesturing and sort of flexing as he signed my copy of their album, as my fourteen year old future sister-in-law, Deatra stood there in total awe!
Thanks Pervis, your’re one of my heroes and your memory will live on.
God’s blessings be unto the family as they adjust to and deal with the loss. Amen.~

  50. Faye L. Parker (Aunt) Says:

To Claudreen , My Sister Henrietta, and the remaining Family Members of my nephew, Pervis Jackson
I am deeply sadden about the loss of Pervis. I thank God I was able to see him in July when he performed in Los Angeles,California. After the Concert, I was able to go back stage and we talked.
I wish I could be with you at this time , unfortunate, I can’t. I extend my heartfelt sympathy. I love all of you.

  52. Jonathan Edmond Says:

I am deeply saddened upon hearing of the death of Pervis Jackson. Best wishes to his family and to the remaining original members who performed with Mr. Jackson for nearly 50 yrs. One thing that I don’t
hear too many people talking about is what a shame it is that The Spinners (one of the greatest soul groups ever) is not in the R&R Hall Of Fame. If they do make it in anytime soon, 3 members Phillipe,
Billy and now Pervis will go in posthumously. Sirs please let your fans know if there’s we can do to get you into the hall! You all deserved it years ago. God bless and once again sorry for your loss.

  53. JEANA JACKSON Says:

MY DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF PERVIS JACKSON:

PERVIS WILL “SURELY” BE MISSED, NOT ONLY BY MY SELF, BUT BY MILLIONS OF FANS ALL OVER THE WORLD.

I MET PERVIS AND THE SPINNERS AT “HITSVILLE, USA WHILE EMPLOYED AT MOTOWN IN DETROIT MI, BY GWEN GORDY FUQUA & HARVEY FUQUA.

THE SPINNERS WERE, AND STILL ARE, A VERY TALENTED, ENERGETIC, & DELIGHTFUL GROUP OF GUYS WHO WERE WELL LIKED AND RESPECTED.

PERVIS WAS A SMILING, CARING, HAPPY GUY; AND HE WAS A GENTLEMAN, WITH A GOD GIVEN TALENT (HIS AWESOME BASS VOICE). PERVIS WAS ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO LEND A HELPING HAND TO ANYONE WHO NEEDED IT.

I KNEW AND WORKED WITH HIM & THE SPINNERS FOR A LONG TIME. PERVIS WAS ALWAYS HAPPY & CLOWNING AROUND W/ALL OF HIS MOTOWN FELLOW EMPLOYEES, WRITERS, PRODUCERS, MUSICIANS, ETC.

MY LAST POSITION, BEFORE LEAVING MOTOWN WAS MIDWEST PROMOTION DIRECTOR. THE COMPANY GAVE ME A NEW RELEASE TO PROMOTE BY THE SPINNERS… I COULDN’T WAIT TO INFORM PERVIS & THE GROUP. THE RECORD WAS….”IT’S A SHAME”, W/GC CAMERON AS LEAD. THE REST IS HISTORY!

I TOO, WILL MISS, AND ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU PERVIS AND YOUR MEMORABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WORLD OF MUSIC.

    UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN,

    JEANA JACKSOM

  56. Ron Johnson (Comedian) Says:

(RIP) Mr. Jackson! It was a pleasure to have met you earlier this year, while I warmed up the audience (although the audience did’nt need warming up) In Virginia. I can’t speak for other comedians, but I have always felt it would be an honor to open for a professional group, as the Spinners! And I was afforded the opportunity, and I THANK GOD for it, as well. I can remember before the show begin, I had the opportunity to meet yourself, Henry & Bobby, original members and to take a picture. You were the first Spinner I’d shook hands with, then it was Henry, then Bobby, and as I took a position in the middle of you guys, I heard this DEEP VOICE say, “Hey Guys” let’s give him a Thumbs Up! The deep voice was your’s Mr. Jackson and I was so excited and nervous, that I even gave myself a Thumbs Up! Here’s the pic: www.ronjohnsonshow.com. In closing, I’d like to say, I had a wonderful time that cold evening in Virginia, not only opening the show, but listening to you all perform. I was back stage and out front as well, I could’nt get enough. But to cap it all off, was to see you guys viewing my performance as you prepared to hit the stage. Wow, how lucky was I, to have met the guys who have recorded so many Wonderful HITS!!! To the family, MAY GOD BE WITH YOU as your dearly departed makes his final journey today, A journey we all will have to make one day. To the remaining original members and to the present members and band members & management, MAY GOD BE WITH YOU, as well. A group, I will never forget!! 62. Juice Says:

I only got to meet Pervis & The Spinners once, when they performed at The Hammerstein Ballroom with martha & The Vandellas & Richard Street.

The fellas were all very nice & though Pervis was feeling ill that evening (having to leave the show midway through), he was very cordial & a gentleman.

The Spinners were a HUGE part of my childhood, beginning with “It’s A Shame” in 1970, right on into my adulthood, with “Right Or Wrong”.

My sincere condolences to his family, friends & also to his fans, one which I am one. I know that whenever I look at a clock & see that it’s a quarter to one, immediately, I’ll hear your booming bass singing…

I have had the priviledge of knowing the Spinners personally since 1972 in the context of being a “little sister to them”. I will forever be grateful for the time I was allowed to hang out on the receiving end of their kindness. Pervis was always in every way a true gentleman with dignity and kindness. He never let success go to his head. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Claudreen and the rest of his family.

  70. Thomas McLean Says:

Man, I feel bad I’m just hearing of this sad news. I’m probably one of the biggest fans of their music in existence. I’m definitely making this website a favorite. Anyway, I’ve listened to and enjoyed their music for many years in my life and have been influenced in the music I create by their production and style. I wish strength, endurance, continued success, and good memories to the family and group! Like the lyrics to a song…”and so there’s a rhyme, that says life will soon be fine”.

  71. Skip Says:

    Dear Mrs. Jackson and Family,

My sincere condolences and sympathy. Having been a fan since the early 70’s, I have found on more than one occasion inspiration from The Spinners and their music. He truly reached the mountaintop.

  75. Philip Kearney Says:

When I was in Junior High my friends and I wanted to perform as the Spinners at our Talent Show. I remember how incredibly cool he was when we woke him at the crack of dawn in his Minneapolis Hotel.
He took time and he gave us some memorabilia which I still treasure. He was so gentle and smooth.
We rocked it out at the talent show including a Rubberband that Pervis gave us. He was our Hero.

  77. Dave Says:

My goodness, what a loss. I just got on the internet to find the concert dates for the spinners and I read about Mr. Jackson’s passing. Growing up in the ’70s, I loved their music. The complicated arrangements so tightly woven, yet still free to express their individual talents. I took my 17 year old daughter to their concert when they came to Kansas City in summer of 2007. She had the time of her life and loved their music. She especially enjoyed Mr. Pervis Jackson. I think that is what stands out for me, their music and art, never faded or got old. After reading all the other posts, I truly regret not ever meeting him.

    Rest in Peace

  78. Nathaniel Jones Says:

He was the best, time and time again “there’s no doubt about that”. In our memories for ever.rest in peace.

  81. Benny Soul Says:

I’m no different than any other fan who idolized the Spinners in the late 60’s to the present.
I first saw them live in 1976 co-headlining a Kool Jazz Fest at San Diego stadium (now Qualcomm)
for Al Green who was at the height of his career.
Weird to say this now, but as great as Green was/is, the true STARS of the show were the Spinners
and the 99% Black, “souled-out” crowd realized this as well, cheering deafly for Purvis & Bobby when
    introduced to the crowd.
John Edwards had only recently been hired to replace Phillipe Wynn, nevertheless, Bobby “Sonny” Smith,
Billy, Henry & Purvis stole the show with their poise, style & singing. I was only 17 but I’ll never forget it.
I listen to their records everyday, especially Truly Yours, and am again addicted to thier songs.
Purvis was the man, no doubt. Funny little story. I used to train with a guy that played guitar for a white
group named the Spinners. When “It’s a shame” broke, they were forced to change their band name!

  82. GARY TANN "HARLEM AFTER MIDNITE" Says:

  83. Aubrey Says:

Oh God why. we cannot be loosing great bass singers like this. This is very unfair for us the music lovers. I just posted a message to Melvin franklin (The former Temptations) message board expressing how I miss him in the group, and now this is Pervis Jackson.

My condolenses to the Group especially the family. I just want to say we have lost in the music industry.

    Aubrey from South Africa

  84. Xavier Burns Says:

I’m very sad today (Nov 23, 2008), I was searching YouTube for newer clips of the Spinners and I noticed no Pervis, no Pervis, and no Pervis!!! So I’m thinking Pervis Jackson must be sick, he’s missing shows. So I “Google search” his name and found that Pervis passed away over 3 months ago. I can’t believe this, just can’t believe it. Was there media coverage??
I never met him, but it feels like family. Ive been a big fan since the song “I’ll Aways Love You”.

I Thank His Family for sharing him with us. He is deeply missed but “Hey hey he’s not far away” you can hear his heart … 12:45.

    Xavier from Oakland Ca

  85. Matt Says:

It truly is sad to hear a Spinner has passed, but the music never will. They made music; title, lyrics, and tone that you could just OWN in your heart. I guess that’s what soul music is all about and The Spinners will always be fantastic.

    Thank you and God Bless
